Redefining the luxury end of the Cherokee line-up, two new models - Cherokee Classic and Limited - are available for the 1998 model year. Cherokee SE and Sport round out the line-up. The Cherokee model line is available in either two- or four-door and two- or four-wheel drive configurations. Cherokee Classic is positioned between the Sport and the top-of the-line Limited. The monotone exterior and low back seats with adjustable headrests set the Classic apart from the Sport. The Cherokee Limited offers the customer all the extras in one package, including leather low back seats with adjustable headrests. Limited replaces the Country in the model line-up.

For 1998, Cherokee's powertrain options increase with the addition of the 2.5-liter, in-line three-speed automatic transmission available on the Cherokee SE. The base engine on the SE is the 2.5-liter four-cylinder, which generates 125 horsepower and 150 foot-pounds of torque. Available on the SE and standard on the Sport, Classic and Limited is the 4.0-liter in line six-cylinder engine, which generates 190 hp and 225 foot pounds of torque.

POWERTRAIN - Buy The Cherokee Here

As part of the Jeep powertrain program two years ago, the engines were extensively refined, receiving state-of-the-art aluminum pistons and revised camshaft profiles. The 4.0-liter block was stiffened with engine block ribbing. The valve covers also were isolated and a main bearing brace added. As a result, key sources of noise, vibration and harshness were eliminated on both engines, while the 4.0-liter engine's torque curve was broadened.

TRACTION CONTROL - Buy The Cherokee Here

Two proven transfer cases are offered in four-wheel drive Cherokees: Command-Trac®, the standard part-time four-wheel-drive system, and Selec-Trac®, the available full-time four-wheel-drive system.

INTERIOR - Buy The Cherokee Here

For the 1997 model year, Cherokee was given an all-new interior and instrument panel with passenger-side air bag; new electrical systems; reduced noise, vibration and harshness; improved fit and finish on the body, and an exterior with a more rounded front and rear. The all-new stamped steel liftgate with hidden hinges is lighter and easier to operate. Due to structural changes in the Cherokee, torsional rigidity was improved by 43 percent for a better ride and handling. Export versions of Cherokee are available in left- and right-hand drive, with engine options that include 2.5-liter four-cylinder, 4.0-liter in-line six-cylinder and 2.5-liter turbo-diesel engines.

Jeep Cherokee is an up-to-date version of the vehicle that started the sport-utility boom in 1984 and a true descendent of the original Jeep. With classic Jeep styling, rugged Jeep capability, and an affordable price, Cherokee endures as one of the most popular SUVs on or off the highway. Adding the three-speed automatic transmission as an option with the 2.5-liter engine enhances appeal of Cherokee SE as the gateway to the Jeep brand. New Classic and Limited models enhance Cherokee's image while retaining the ability to go places that pretenders cannot.
