1998 ISUZU TROOPER CHANGES:
MORE THAN SKIN DEEP

For 1998, Trooper is significantly improved. While the exterior has received subtle, but significant styling changes; a new front grille, bumper, headlights and front fenders, beneath the new sheetmetal, the drive-tra.in has undergone major improvements. Virtually every system from air-intake to final drive has been changed or refined.

New this year is a hard spare tire cover, color-keyed to the vehicle's body color and integrated into the Trooper's overall styling. The "S" model is the least expensive Trooper and the only one to offer a five-speed manual transmission as standard equipment. The "S" with Performance Package and "S" with Luxury Package come standard with four-speed automatic transmissions, limited slip differential and Torque On Demand (TOD)™. Also standard on "Performance" and "Luxury" models are power folding dual mirrors with remote control and electric defogger, variable intermittent windshield wipers with washers, privacy side and rear door glass, rear passenger foot rests, cargo floor rails and carpeted front door map pockets. The "S Luxury" comes standard with power moonroof, six-way, power driver's seat, four-way for passenger, heated driver and passenger seats, leather seating surfaces, in-dash AM/FM stereo cassette player with six speakers and six-disc CD changer.

1998 ISUZU TROOPER' S IMPROVED ENGINE,
FEATURES MORE POWER AND TORQUE

The 1998 Trooper features a significantly improved and refined engine. The engine is tuned specifically to take full advantage of the new Torque on Demand (TOD),™ drive system.

Engine size, horsepower and torque have all been increased. The new engine displaces 213 cubic inches (3.50 liters) versus the 193 cubic inches (3.165 liters) of the previous version. Horsepower is up 13 percent, from 190 @ 5600 rpm, to 215 @ 5400 rpm. At the same time, torque output has been increased from 188 lb. ft. @ 4000 rpm to 230 lb. ft.@ 3000 rpm, an improvement of 22 percent. The engine has been made lighter and simpler.

Breathing is made easier through the application of a four-valve, dual-overhead cam design, with direct actuation of the valves. By eliminating the rocker arms, rocker- ann shafts and hydraulic valve lifters, reliability has been improved, noise, vibration and harshness diminished, the system simplified and costs reduced. Improved responsiveness and output have been achieved through a combination of newly developed cross-flow straight configuration intake ports, and variable length intake ports, providing power increases throughout the entire rev range.

The variable air-intake system employs a butterfly valve that effectively lengthens or shortens the length of the intake track depending on the operating speed of the engine. Below 3600 rpm the valve closes, effectively lengthening the intake track. The longer track increases the volume of air, providing high torque at low and intermediate speeds.

As engine speed increases, over 3600 rpm, the solenoid switch turns off, shortening the port and providing high torque at high speeds. Cylinder heads are of die-cast aluminum alloy with pent-roof type combustion chambers. The included valve angle is 19, making the combustion chambers very compact. Squish areas are provided to allow reliable combustion at low rpm.

Major effort has been put into reducing friction as a means to increase output. As an example, camshafts have been micro-polished to reduce frictional resistance. Low-tension valve springs are employed along with short skirt pistons and groove bearings for connecting rods and main bearing surfaces. Direct valve actuation further contributes to the reduction of power-sapping friction as well as contributing to overall weight reduction. Attention has also been focused on mainta&127ining low intake air temperatures. The air intake duct has been moved from under the hood, to a position inside the left front wheel well outside the engine compartment. Pheonolic plastic gaskets further isolate the intake chamber from the cylinder head, reducing intake air temperatures and contributing to the overall power increase. Noise, vibration and harshness have also been improved. The engine features a two-stage aluminum crankcase and steel oil pan combination that produces greater power plant rigidity and a reduction in noise and vibration. Rubber is used in isolating the cylinder head and timing belt covers, to further reduce noise and vibration. Additionally, a combination of two-stage reduction gear drive and a backlash-free configuration for the camshaft drive gears reduce noise while giving precise valve timing.

The need for maintenance is reduced with the application of platinum tipped spark-plugs and a six-tooth, polyester serpentine auxiliary belt drive. The platinum plugs are good for 100,000 miles and the belt is equipped urith an auto-tensioner that requires no manual adjustment, extending the service life of the engine.
